Why Zirconium?

Zirconium occupies a niche at the top of the corrosion-resistance ladder. In hot organic acids — acetic and formic acid service above the temperatures where 316 stainless pits and crevice-corrodes — and in urea-plant carbamate service and many hot mineral-acid environments, R60702 zirconium survives conditions that consume stainless steels, duplex grades, and many nickel alloys. That performance is why acetic-acid producers, urea plants, and specialty chemical processors specify zirconium valves despite the metal’s cost: the valve outlives generations of cheaper-alloy replacements and eliminates the unplanned outages that go with them.

The deepest pool in the inventory is the 1″ Class 300 Ladish P235-V630-DR02-E10N — fifteen matched valves. Ball Valves: API 607 Fire-Safe, B16.34/608 Construction

The Ladish ball valves in this inventory are API 607 fire-safe designs built to ASME B16.34 and API 608, with R60702 zirconium bodies, stems, and balls, glass-filled PTFE seats, RF/PTFE seals, and graphite gaskets. Body stampings carry the heat number, and the Ladish modification tags (with figure numbers and fastener specs) are still wired to the valves — the traceability your QA department will ask about is physically on the hardware.

The Check Valve: All-Metal to 700 °F

The single most capable piece in the inventory is the 3″ Class 300 Ladish B550 check valve (EHE D pattern): body, obturator, and seat all in R60702, rated 589 PSI at 700 °F — no soft parts to limit temperature — built to B16.34/594 with a graphite gasket. It weighs 145 lbs of solid zirconium. If a hot-service check valve failure has been holding a line hostage, this is the one-in-stock solution.

For automated duty there’s a Setpoint 2″ Class 300 ball valve in ZR702 zirconium (ASTM B493) with its pneumatic actuator already mounted — an unusually cheap entry into actuated zirconium at $1,599.99, given that the actuator alone would cost a meaningful fraction of that new.

Zr702 vs. Zr705 — and Why These Are R60702

ASTM B550 covers zirconium bar and forgings in two commercial grades. R60702 (Zr702) is commercially pure zirconium; R60705 (Zr705) adds 2–3% niobium for roughly half again the strength at the cost of some corrosion margin and weldability. Valve bodies are overwhelmingly produced in 702, and every Ladish and Setpoint valve on this page is R60702 body and trim. For pressure-boundary duty at Class 150/300 ratings, 702’s lower strength is already accounted for in the B16.34 rating tables — you give up nothing by not having 705 in a valve.

Where Zirconium Beats Hastelloy and Titanium

Zirconium is not a general-purpose upgrade; it is a specialist with a narrow, valuable window:

  • Hot concentrated acetic and formic acid — the classic service. Zirconium is essentially inert across all concentrations to boiling, where stainless pits and titanium suffers in anhydrous conditions.
  • Sulfuric acid to ~70% at boiling — corrosion rates a fraction of Hastelloy’s. Above ~70% concentration the oxide film breaks down; do not use it there.
  • Hydrochloric acid, all concentrations, boiling — one of very few metals that survives reducing HCl, where titanium fails quickly. Watch for ferric or cupric ion contamination, which attacks zirconium.
  • Alkalis to 50% at boiling — handles hot NaOH where titanium is limited.
  • Do not specify zirconium for hydrofluoric acid (any concentration), wet chlorine, aqua regia, or ferric-chloride-bearing streams. That is Hastelloy or tantalum territory — see our Hastelloy C-22/C-276 inventory.

The economics follow the metallurgy: a new zirconium ball valve is a 20-plus-week mill-order item priced like an exotic, because it is one. Pickling lines, acetic/terephthalic acid plants, and specialty chemical producers spare these valves aggressively — which is exactly why a tested surplus pool with matched units matters.

  • Seat integrity — full open/close cycling and bubble-tight seat check on ball valves; free swing and reseat on checks.

What does “Ladish B550” mean on the nameplate?

Ladish is the valve maker (Ladish Valves, Houston); B550 is the ASTM material specification for the zirconium body forging. Together they identify a pressure-rated valve whose wetted parts are R60702 zirconium, not a coated or lined substitute.

Are these lined or solid zirconium?

Solid. Body, ball, and stem are wrought/cast zirconium per B550/B752 — there is no liner to breach and no substrate to protect, which is why surplus units with clean bores are functionally equivalent to new metal.

Can I install a Class 300 valve in a Class 150 line?

Yes — flange drilling differs, so confirm your mating flanges, but a higher class in the same size is a common way to buy margin from surplus stock when the price difference is small.
