AP40/100GE vs. RP40/100GE: Which Tier Do You Need?

The split mirrors the rest of Ixia’s line: AP (Accelerated Performance, 944-1067) is the full Layer 2–7 card — stateful IxLoad application testing plus full-scale IxNetwork protocol emulation. RP (Reduced Performance, 944-1068) keeps the same dual-speed data plane for line-rate L2–3 traffic generation and benchmarking at a lower price point.

An honest note for buyers: as with every Ixia tier split, the capability difference is hardware — a Reduced Performance card cannot be licensed up to AP later. If stateful L4–7 testing at 40/100GE is anywhere on your roadmap, buy the AP card the first time.

  • These are FPGA-dense, heatsink-covered boards that run warm by design. Give the chassis the airflow headroom Ixia specifies, keep blanking panels in unused slots, and size lab cooling before the cards arrive.
  • IxOS version support matters at 40/100G — tell us your chassis and IxOS revision and we will confirm compatibility before you buy.

Which Older Ixia Modules the Lava Replaces

Lava superseded Ixia’s first wave of high-speed Ethernet cards, and consolidates them with speed flexibility none of them had:

  • HSE40GETSP1-01 (944-0069) — single-port 40GE-only module. The Lava doubles the port count and adds 100GE capability in the same slot.
  • HSE40/100GETSP1-01 (944-0091) — the original dual-speed single-port card. The Lava carries twice the ports per slot with the newer Xcellon architecture behind them.
  • HSE40/100GETSPR1-01 (944-0099) — the Reduced Performance data-plane variant of the same generation.
